The Salvation Army’s Home Shopper service is designed to support older people (65+) who live alone and are essentially housebound. It is aimed at those with low level care needs, who are able to manage all other everyday tasks, such as personal care, with minimal support.
It is predominantly a reablement service provided on a short-term basis with a view to supporting the older person to rediscover and maintain their independence, which will enable them to live longer in the community.
The service is provided through a home shopper who will liaise with the client to ascertain their basic household shopping requirements and then purchase and deliver the required goods to them. The service will provide the client with the groceries and household items necessary for daily living. It does not include the purchase of clothing, furniture etc...
Besides the obvious practical benefits of the scheme, the home shopper is able to keep an eye on the client to check they are safe, well and eating properly. Clients benefit immensely from the regular contact that the scheme offers and feel that they are able to retain an element of independence. We have two Home Shoppers who shop for up to 60 older people each week.
During the six-week trial period the home shopper will work with the older person to help identify alternative ways to undertake their shopping independently, in the long-term. This could involve introducing them to online shopping, determining if a family member or neighbour could assist with their shopping or using a combination of local shopping and the home shopper service.
Each case will be reviewed at the end of the trial period and a decision taken as to the long-term provision.
The service is charged at £3 per delivery, payable in cash to the home shopper when the goods are delivered.
The service is supported by Portsmouth City Council’s Adult Social Care.
